1st December 2011WEYMOUTH: Special gift in memory of Ken
WEYMOUTH’S Melcombe Regis Rotary Club held their annual dinner at the Hotel Prince Regent in honour of their president Stuart Bainbridge and his wife Lesley.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Weymouth and Portland, Graham and Mary Winter, were among guests together with representatives from local Rotary and other service clubs.
Mr Bainbridge told the assembly how proud he was to be president of such a hard working club which had made so much money for so many charities and had an enormous amount of fun while doing it.
He added: “For the benefit of our guests who do not know what the club does, we work throughout the year putting on events like the Karting Relay Race at Clay Pigeon Raceway, the Dragon Boat races in Weymouth Bay and, over the next few weeks, we will be touring the streets of Weymouth playing Christmas carols, all of which will aid local and national charities.
“We also take great pride in working alongside the other Rotary clubs in Weymouth to organise the carnival, the proceeds of which go to local charities.”
A very special presentation was made to the club by Christine Hazard, wife of the late Ken Hazard MBE, a former Rotary president who died last year.
Christine said: “During his military career, Ken was quartermaster of the Queens Gurkha Engineer Regiment and he always held the Gurkhas in high esteem.
My family and I hold this club in equally high esteem so I present you with this Gurkha Kukri and ceremonial mounting to be awarded annually by the president to the most deserving Rotarian in the club.
Mr Bainbridge replied: “We will cherish this award — to be named Ken’s Kukri — in the same way that we cherish Ken’s memory.”
A raffle was held during the evening which resulted in £875 being divided between the president’s nominated charities The Alzheimer’s Society, DCH Digital Mammography Scanner Appeal and the Will Mackaness Trust.
