14th October 2011AXMINSTER: Lions wedding followed by club's first swimathon just hours later
TWO members of Axminster and District Lions, Jamie Love and Beverly Brookes, married on Saturday at the United Reform Church - a very special occasion which called for a Lions Guard of Honour.
Only a Lions wedding was a good enough excuse to be absent from the organisation’s next big splash three hours later, their first sponsored swimathon at the Flamingo Pool.
Swimmers came from seven organisations, including the 1st Lym Valley Scout Group, Axminster Guides, Musbury Primary School, St Michael’s Primary School in Lyme Regis, Rainbow Play Group and the Flamingo Pool itself.
Jane Caddy and Karen Hill from Making Waves Hairdressers in Lyme Regis also swam for Uplyme teenager Sam Daubany-Nunn, who needs urgent treatment for cancer.
Some individuals were sponsored for over £100 and many youngsters swam further than they had ever done before, showing great determination for their causes. The majority of participants swam the 20 lengths and all received a certificate of commendation from Lions President Marcia Cook
Special thanks go to Karen Yelland and Rachel Tettersell, who motivated 14 Scouts and seven Guides to swim, and Nick Gear who came along to watch his son but was persuaded to borrow kit and take the plunge himself to add to the Scout’s total.
The money raised will be distributed with 50 per cent going to the swimmers’ chosen charities, 25 per cent to the Flamingo Pool and 25 per cent to Lions charities.
The Lions would like to thank most sincerely all those who helped to make this event a success – the staff at the pool who made it all possible free of charge, the friends of Lions who came to help record laps etc, and those who generously sponsored the swimmers.
