BEAMINSTER: Bogus charity collector arrested

By Tom Glover

AN allegedly armed Beaminster man has been arrested after knocking on doors and posing as a fundraiser for a cancer charity.

The 21-year-old Beaminster man was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of an offensive weapon and collecting money fraudulently, on Wednesday of last week.

An appeal to catch the scam artist went out in the View from Beaminster in March.

Suspicious residents had reported the man to police after he knocked on their doors claiming to be collecting for a cancer charity.

The man also claimed that he was raising money for the charity by taking part in a sponsored walk with the Air Training Corp.

Police are now looking for residents who may have given the man money, to come forward to help them in their investigation and to identify potential victims.

Anyone who has ‘sponsored’ this man, please contact Bridport Police Station, on 01305 222222.

If anyone is interested in joining the Beaminster Home Watch scheme, or would like any crime prevention advice, please contact Beaminster Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01308 862222.
