12th October 2011LYME REGIS: Lyme cyclists raises £1,000 for the Prostate Cancer Charity
A LYME Regis resident raised £1,000 for the Prostate Cancer Charity by taking part in the 100-mile Kielder mountain bike race.
Mike Broome, who lives in Anning Road, took part in the race through Kielder Forest, on the border of England and Scotland, alongside 598 other cyclists in heavy rain.
A year earlier, Mr Broome, who is an instructor at the Boat Building Academy at Monmouth Beach, gave up smoking and bought a mountain bike to improve his fitness. His hard work and dedication meant he was ready to face the 100 miles of off-road cycling in some of the toughest conditions that the race had seen, which resulted in only 177 of the 599 competitors completing the course.
Unfortunately, despite battling hard through the rain and mud, Mr Broome missed the 51 mile cut-off by just eight minutes so was not allowed to complete the remainder of the race. However, he did reach the sponsorship target that he had set himself.
Mr Broome chose to race in support of the Prostate Cancer Charity and his money will go towards research into the condition and support for sufferers.
He would like to thank all those who have sponsored him both locally and via his JustGiving website www.justgiving.com/mike-broome.
Mr Broome said the Kielder race in now “unfinished business” and he has already started training for next year’s event.
