3rd October 2012WEYMOUTH:Pitch and putt champions beat off the rest
By Harry Walton
BRIGHT sunshine lit up a pitch and putt challenge at Lodmoor Country Park in Weymouth.
The event was a joint venture by the Friends of the Park and Weymouth Pitch and Putt proprietors Ray and Tricia Bishop.
Sixteen contestants, the majority of them novices, took advantage of reduced-price tickets and tried their hand at golf, with specially-commissioned commemorative mugs and golf passes up for grabs as prizes in three age categories.
There was a real atmosphere of excitement from the youngest contestant, who had been anticipating the event for weeks, to the winner of the adult group who immediately played a second round as he'd had so much fun!
Five-year-old William Osborne of Portland came dressed to impress and was rewarded by winning the 5-11 years group. William, who goes to school at Brackenbury, was introduced to golf by his grandmother. He is already a regular at local courses and is looking forward to defending his title when the Lodmoor Friends repeat the event next year.
Mike Sheldon said he was "made up" to have won the adult award, which was the most fiercely-contested of all. Rich Copp was the winner of the 12-16 year category.
