3rd October 2012WEYMOUTH: Appeal to get radio station on the air
By Harry Walton
WEYMOUTH-based Air FM, a community radio station which is due to go live on FM in 2013, has launched an appeal to raise money for its transmitter fund.
Air grew out of the Arqiva Award-winning internet station Air Student Radio and, having been of service to many Weymouth school students, the organisers recognised a gap in provision for a community radio station for the town which that could play a similar entertainment, support and information service. Ofcom agreed and a licence was granted.
The FM Station will soon be providing local interest stories, local news and events and it will also act in a “signposting” role for all other local service providers, support agencies and activity providers.
Station manager Carl Greenham said: “To finish setting up the station, web site, support role and Music Performance Movie channel, Air FM first needs support from within its community.
“So, if you run an activity or interest club from aquarobics and zumba to archaeology and zoology, if you are involved with a charity, if you provide some form of support service to members of the community then contact Air FM to arrange your free broadcasting schedules that will empower and profile your work.
“Also contact us if you would like to join the station and train to be a studio technician, a presenter, a sound engineer or a reporter of local events.
“Our most pressing need at the moment is to raise money for our transmitter fund.
“There will be a range of FUN-draisers starting with a Hallowe’en ball, but for the immediate moment, we have teamed up with Dorset Community Trust and their Grow A Tenner campaign.
“Any donation made online will be doubled until the £500,000 provided to help all charities that register runs out.
“If you are raising money for a worthwhile cause, seek out the Grow A Tenner fund. If you would like to help Air FM raise its entertainment and information aerial, donate today at www.aironair.co.uk.”
