DORCHESTER: Staff praised for ‘going the extra mile’

By Trevor Bevins

Staff who have ‘gone the extra mile’ at Dorset County Hospital to help patients have been honoured for their hard work and dedication.

Also being thanked at the 2012 Trust Awards were those who have devoted 15 and 30 years of service.

Trust chairman Dr Jeffrey Ellwood and Jean O’Callaghan, chief executive, presented the awards at a ceremony held at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester.

New awards this year included a Lifetime Achievement Award which was presented to children’s community nurse Jane Hopcraft.

Jane is retiring this month after more than 30 years with the hospital.

She established the community paediatric team at the hospital in 1992 and is well-known and respected both within the hospital and in the wider community.

Jane’s citation read: “Throughout her career Jane has always ensured the child and family are at the centre of care and has often gone beyond the call of duty whenever a child or family has needed her.

“Her colleagues and friends all agree that there is no other nurse more deserving of this Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Through her hard work, dedication, ‘can do’ personality and ‘hands on’ approach she has made a significant and lasting contribution to patients, families and the services provided by this trust.”

The trust’s director of workforce and human resources Mark Power, who opened the ceremony, said: “This event is a true celebration of the contribution and achievements of our staff and volunteers, and of the fantastic work they undertake on behalf of our hospital’s many patients, carers and service users.

“It’s an opportunity to say a heartfelt ‘well done’ and ‘thank you’ to them in the company of colleagues, friends and family.”
