19th September 2012AXMINSTER: Cheers, say new couple at village pub
The new landlords of The George Inn in Chardstock have thanked staff and the local community for the support given during a hectic first month.
"It's been hard work, we couldn't have gone through it without the staff and the support from the community," said Ann-Marie Dixon.
Ann-Marie and her husband, Dominic, have lived in the village for 14 years and had the chance to take over the pub six years ago.
At that time they decided against it because Ann-Marie was pregnant and Dominic was involved with building projects.
Ann-Marie has previous experience of the hospitality sector, being a former manager with TrustHouse Forte.
Dominic, however, is new to the trade but his background as a builder and property developer comes in handy for the ongoing renovation of the pub. Among other things, the whole pub is about to be re-floored with oak.
Since taking over, they have introduced a menu featuring "realistically priced traditional pub grub" with new chef Dan Passmore. There is also a children's menu, and Dominic said: "We have four children, so we know that children don't always want the same food as their parents."
The pub used to be closed on Mondays, but Ann-Marie and Dominic say it is now business seven days a week. They want to give the pub a community feel, with local families bringing their children and dogs in to enjoy what is on offer at affordable prices.
The final touches are currently being applied to the Christmas menu, and future plans include a regular live music night and guest bitters from local micro-breweries.
