SIDMOUTH: Red Rocks celebration of Jurassic Coast at Sidmouth Museum

Red Rocks Jamboree is one of Sidmouth Museum’s most important annual events in celebration of the World Heritage coastline.

This year it will run from Wednesday August 15th to Friday August 17th.

The event has been extended across three days as part of the Jurassic Coast Earth Festival.

Red Rocks Jamboree offers a chance for people of all ages to learn about the rocks, fossils, flints and minerals that form our local geology from a team of local geologists and mineralogists.  Hands on activities for all ages will ensure that everyone in the family will find something of interest and fun.

On Wednesday (15th) and Thursday (16th), geologist Rosemary Stewart will be explaining the uses of flints and how they are measured and logged. Wednesday is also the day to learn all about minerals with Micky Gough and Keith Corrie who will be displaying a fine selection from their collection.

Each day the museum’s in-house geologist Roger LeVoir will be conducting geology walks along the seafront and showing examples of the many different rocks and fossils to be found locally.

There will also be fun for any young people who visit, including a chance to dig for fossils in the sand, make a fossil mould and take part in a building stone quiz, as well as panning under the tutelage of Roger Trend.

Activities take place between 10.30am and 3.30pm each day.  Entry is free. Donations are welcomed to help support the museum, which is entirely run by volunteers.
