8th August 2012LYME REGIS: Carnival spirit takes over town
BY Francesca Evans
LYME Regis Regatta and Carnival Week got off to a great start on Saturday, with many local residents and visitors joining in the fun and games.
The week started with the sailing club regatta and games including the golf ball derby, egg catching and balloon races. Unfortunately, Lyme Regis Gig Club’s regatta had to be cancelled due to poor weather, but other events on Sunday went ahead, including a display by lifeboat “Spirit of Loch Fyne” and the Joshua Memorial Dog Show, which saw an unprecedented number of entrants.
Children’s entertainment has continued throughout the week with sand sports and a limbo competition. Many of the events have included an Olympic theme, including the new Carnival Games with children joining in miniature shot put, compact disc throwing, the “hi jump” and swimming on the sand. Many of the drawings in the pavement art competition also reflected the Olympic spirit.
Adults have been joining in the fun too. The favourite Wheeled Derby was held on Monday evening with 24 participants dashing from the Ship Inn to the Royal Standard in fancy dress.
Other entertainment has included taiko drumming, taekwondo and gymnastics displays.
Events will continue throughout the week, with a treasure hunt, teddy bear’s picnic, sandcastle competition, junior town crier’s competition, crab catching and a majorettes display among the many activities planned.
Highlights of the week are set to include the Walk of Light torchlight procession tomorrow (Thursday) from the Langmoor Gardens entrance at 9pm.
On Saturday night the week will climax with the Grand Carnival Procession, leaving Holmbush Car Park at 8pm. This will be followed by live music on the seafront and a fireworks display at 10pm.
The week will finish on Sunday with a duck race from Windsor Terrace at 12noon.
