25th July 2012BRIDPORT: Big weekend fundraiser for Bridport church
By Chris Denne
St Swithun’s Day was celebrated in style at Bridport’s St Swithuns church with a weekend of events.
Visitors to the church enjoyed dance, stalls and a church service overseen by the Bishop of Ebbsfleet over the most important weekend in the church’s calendar.
Stalls, a tombola and refreshments all contributed to the efforts which raised much-needed funds for the North Allington church.
Meanwhile, young people from the Lyric School of Dance entertained church members with a series of dances showcasing the talents of girls in three age groups.
Teresa Grinter, who runs the dancing school, oversaw the dancing.
She said: “We are always happy to support days like this. The Charter Fair was rained off so it’s good for the girls to have the chance to perform. They enjoy showing what they can do.”
Church warden Graham Williams was hoping the event would bring in as much money as possible for the church.
He said: “St Swithun’s day is one of the key dates in the calendar for us.”
Church member Verena Doyle organised the fundraising efforts.
She said: “We aim to raise as much as we can. We have large bills and need days like this to keep the church going.”
