25th July 2012OTTERY ST MARY: Stand by your beds for Ottery fun Olympics
By Laura Goldsbury Noy
The Otter Valley Rotary Club celebrated the upcoming Olympics with a special day of sporting fun for Ottery residents.
As local teams took to the streets, racing beds and dressed from head to toe in fancy dress, there was no time for a snooze.
After being allocated beds in a draw, teams were given the chance to makeover their allocated ‘vehicles’ and from babies to the British Heart Foundation, to blokes with breasts, everyone embraced the competition.
Teams came from Ottery Football Club Veterans and Ottery Football Club Ladies, Ottery Youth Coaches, Ottery British Heart Foundation, Ottery Young Farmers, Ottery Youth Club and the Ottery Carnival committee.
The final winners were the Ottery Young Farmers with their cot inspired bed, who raced round the course in the quickest time, cheering as they crossed the finish line.
Following the race, members of Otter Valley Rotary continued a day of sporting events at the football club. From children’s races and family games to an amusing and rather exciting ‘it’s a knock out, the day involved all the community and, following the recent flooding, brought a welcome aspect of fun to the town.
Torchbearer, Adam Rook also joined in the event to promote the Olympics and support Olympic events on a local scale. Adam ran the first leg of the Olympic torch relay in Exeter. He was nominated for his charity involvement and sports interests - running the Paris Marathon, raising £1,500 for the GB Paralympics Squad and coaching rugby for Topsham Rugby Club under 6 and under 10’s squad.
Organisers of the event were pleased with its success, especially with the huge amount of support for the bed race, and hope the summer event can become an annual addition to the town’s calendar.
