LYME REGIS: Over 100 entries in Town Mills annual art competition

THE Town Mill in Lyme Regis launched its 5th annual Open Art Competition and Exhibition with a preview night last Saturday afternoon.

Organisers said the event was a great success and very well attended with 113 works of art entered into the competition. They were judged by Anna Powell, curator of Sladers Yard in West Bay, and artist and writer Vivienne Light.

Prizes were handed out by Town Mill chairman Chris Savory with first place of £250 going to Gerry Dudgeon for his painting “West Dorset Snowfields”. Second prize of £100 went to Elaine Dixon for “Circus Girl on a Pony” and Louise Waugh winning third prize of £50 with “Beachcombing with Dog”.

Also named highly commended were Barbara Karn and Bernard Miles, and commendations were given to Camille Clipson and Ian McGregor.

With such a high quality of entries and diverse styles and subject matter the judges had a difficult task on their hands.

Speaking on their choice of winner, they said: “We chose this because of the qualities of light, the angles and the shadows falling across hills we recognised as West Dorset. Compositionally strong, the layering and texturing of paint are highly accomplished.”

All entries can still be viewed at the Town Mill Malthouse until July 22nd and the People’s Choice Prize is still up for grabs. It will be awarded to the artist who receives the most votes from those viewing the exhibition.

The Town Mill would like to thanks its sponsors: Creative Solutions, Image Art, Onni Framing & Design, Martin Diplock, Tesco Express Lyme Regis, The Co-Op Lyme Regis, British Fossils, Axminster Printing, Mariners Hotel, The Harbour Inn, The Royal Lion Hotel, The Alexandra Hotel, Town Mill Trustees, Town Mill Brewery, Brian Matravers, Town Mill Cheesemonger, Town Mill Pottery and the Mill Cafe.
