15th March 2012DORCHESTER: The Range opens its doors
By Trevor Bevins
More than a hundred full and part-time jobs have been created with the opening of Dorchester’s The Range homeware store.
More than a thousand people applied for the posts.
The opening also created its own traffic jam on Friday morning as anxious shoppers tried to get to see what the new business had to offer.
Traffic was snarled up on the station approach road and out into the junction and neighbouring roads.
The company has taken over the former Focus DIY unit next to the town’s West Rail Station.
For company founder Chris Dawson Friday’s opening was a welcome return to the county town where, earlier in his life, he was a market trader.
Mr Dawson said: “Opening a brand new store in such a vibrant location as Dorchester is an exciting prospect for The Range.”
He described his first trading day in the county town as “absolutely amazing”.
There to help him with the opening was life-long friend Peter Tizzard and wife Maureen from Weymouth.
The two men used to race motorcycles together locally and have remained firm friends ever since.
With Dorchester his 61st store he has others in the pipeline and reckons he will bring another 2,000 jobs to the country within a year.
The Dorchester store is sandwiched between his other Range outlets in Poole and Exeter.
Mr Dawson believes that the new store is unlikely to offer too much competition to Dorchester’s town centre, and that the presence of The Range is likely to attract more people into Dorchester.
“It’s the customers who will decide whether they like us or not.
“We’ve got a great staff team who’ve worked hard to get us open in time, we can offer a great range of products and free parking so they don’t have to lug stuff about, what more can you want.” he said.
