By Chris Denne
Beaminster St Marys primary school football team took another step towards the knockout stages of the Kenway Cup with a solid victory over Uplyme.
The win means that the primary school team have won twice and lost once in the group stage of this 16 team competition.
But, winning is not the only thing that matters to team coach Dave Allen.
He said: “It’s all about enthusing the kids, getting them involved. We lost the last game but the kids still came off the pitch smiling.”
His players, mixed boys and girls aged 8 to 11, were smiling again after this victory, running out 4-0 winners over a determined opposition.
Mr Allen, who runs Hogshill Stores opposite the school, believes passing and keeping possession are the most important skills for young footballers to develop.
He said: “I always tell them to do the simple thing. You make yourself look good if you do.”
And with goals from Isaac House, Ben King and James Hill, plus an Uplyme own-goal, Beaminster St Marys are looking good to qualify for the knockout stages of this Bridport area cup competition.
Assistant coach Pete Stone, whose daughter Saffron is in the team, competed in the Kenway cup for St Marys in 1976/7. The lineage continues in Dave Allen’s family too, with daughter Lucy also in the team.
