1st February 2012BRIDPORT FOOTBALL: Senior: Worst performance of the season
BRIDPORT boss Trevor Senior was disappointed with his sides display against fellow strugglers Corsham Town on Saturday calling it one of the worst performances of the season.
Having beaten Radstock Town last week to put themselves ten points clear of the bottom two teams, Bridport were dragged back into the relegation fight when they conceded two first half goals, both of which involved an element of bad luck.
Keeper Sam Filkins produced a double save leading to the first goal, whilst the second two minutes later, was even more extraordinary when after producing a fantastic save the ball hit him on the back of the head and went into goal.
Senior said: “The fact that Corsham only had three shots in the game and scored with two of them tells you a story, whilst we did slightly better but had two efforts cleared off the line.
“Both sides set up to try to ensure they didn’t lose with just one striker. It worked for us last week at Radstock and so we started with the same side with just Tom Richardson up front.
“The pitch was very tacky and not conducive to good football, and it became a bit of a non-event with nothing to get excited about. It was just about our worst performance of the season.
“We were a bit unlucky with both goals, particularly the second one where Sam Filkins made a magnificent save to push the ball on to the crossbar and then the post only for it to hit him on the back of the head and go into goal.
“Having said that you have to give Corsham credit, having scored their goals and with us not playing very well they hung on for the win.
“Sam didn’t have a save to make in the second-half and although we had two cleared off the line and Jamie Morgan had a couple of long range efforts in the second-half, we didn’t really get going.”
Senior confirmed that the club had received seven days notice of approach from Wessex Premier League side Blackfield & Langley for Richardson.
The Hampshire side are currently struggling near the bottom of the table and now include former Dorchester Town manager Ashley Vickers among their ranks.
Senior said: “It would be a blow if Tom were to go. He is friendly with Vickers so whether that is the connection with them struggling for goals I don’t know.”
With Sam Charles still out injured with a knee injury Richardson has been playing up front alone in recent weeks and would be a big loss. He has scored five times for the Bees this term and after Sam Charles (12) and Dan Wise (8) is the third highest scorer.
This Saturday Bridport entertain Street at St Mary’s Field (ko 3pm) where a victory would lift them above their opponents into 13th spot in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division.
Whilst Shane Evans is still serving the last of his three match suspension, Senior welcomes back captain Darren Lock into the squad after suspension and injury.
