Funding available for community projects

By Paul Crompton

THE doors are now open for community projects in the Chard area to submit ideas and claim their share of a £40,000 funding pot.

Applicants, both groups and individuals, now have until March 20th to submit an application to Opportunity Chard and claim up to £5,000 from South Somerset District Council.

Successful applications will then be put through to second stage and invited along to a public meeting on April 22nd, where successful projects will be decided upon during a public voting event.

Projects are invited to apply within four themes: children and young people, enhancing village life, healthy lifestyles and community participation, and individuals ideas for improving local services.

SSDC’s Community Development Officer, Claire Littlejohn, said: “The doors are now open for new applications so we are really encouraging any groups, organisations or individuals who have ideas that fit into these broad themes to come forward and find out how to apply.

“It’s as simple as filling out an application form, letting us know what the project is and how it would benefit local people, and we then give the guidance on what to do next.”

Crewkerne’s recent Opportunity event supported new sports equipment for local clubs, improvements to clubhouse buildings, a new drop-in centre and ten other community projects.

Councillor Kim Turner, Chairman of South Somerset’s Area West Committee said this was the chance for those who lived in the area to have a go at making things happen.

“Perhaps they belong to a club that needs a new minibus, or maybe they’d like to see a new facility for the area and need the funds to set it up,” he said.

“It’s really down to the residents and we are looking forward to the ideas coming through to us.

“The aim of the game is for us as a council to help make improvements to the area with as much input from the community as possible.”

Applicants must be from the Chard Town, Buckland St Mary, Whitestaunton, Wambrook, Knowle St Giles, Chaffcombe, Cricket St Thomas, Winsham, Tatworth and Forton and Coombe St Nicholas area.

Application forms are available from the Area News pages at

www.southsomerset.gov.uk/community, or through Ms Littlejohn at SSDC on (01460) 460359 or [email protected]
