16th November 2011WEYMOUTH FOOTBALL: Terras dig-in for victory
Hemel Hempstead 1 Weymouth 2
Attendance: 314
DESPITE having an extra man for 80 minutes, Weymouth had to dig in to hold on for victory against lowly Hemel Hempstead at Vauxhall Road on Saturday in their latest Evo-Stick Southern Premier game.
Charlie Gorman, who had only put pen to paper and signed a contract for the Tudors a day earlier, received a straight red card for a two footed tackle on Ben Gerring after 10 minutes which made the home sides task even harder to climb away from the relegation area.
However, after pulling a goal back midway through the second half after Weymouth had looked in command with goals from Warren Byerley and Matt Groves, the Terras were forced to dig-in as Hemel sought a share of the spoils.
Without a league win since September, Hemel who were looking to continue some fine recent form in the cup competitions had already had Warren Goodhand booked for a tackle on Ben Malsom before Gorman’s dismissal.
Weymouth took time to settle and it wasn’t until midway through the half that they had their first effort on goal with Jamie Beasley firing over after making room for himself. Byerley then headed wide before Ryan O’Hara had a great opportunity to give the Tudors the lead, but he appeared surprised when the ball was deflected into his path and sliced his shot wide from close in.
Soon after Ross Lafayette headed wide as the ten-men grew in confidence, and then set up Lewis Toomey who failed to hit the target with only Tom Manley to beat just two minutes before the break.
Weymouth finally registered their first serious effort right on the whistle but Tudor’s keeper Nick Bussey thwarted Byerley at his near post.
Weymouth got into the match after the interval and finally broke the deadlock on 50 minutes from the penalty spot when Matt McEntegart was adjudged to have handled Sam Malsom’s driven effort; Byerley sending Bussey the wrong way.
Almost immediately Manley was called on to keep his side ahead when he saved well from Toomey after Lafayette had played him in before it appeared Groves had made the game safe for Weymouth when he poked home the rebound after Bussey had turned Byerley’s 30-yard shot onto the crossbar.
Hemel responded well and two minutes later had cut the deficit when Jack Eades threaded the ball through to Marvin Williams who sent a cross to the on racing Josh Scowen to neatly finish from eight yards.
This lifted Hemel’s spirits and they swept forward bombarding the Weymouth defence with a succession of corners. Eades went close with a curling effort and McEntegart headed over from close in before Manley received a blow to the head saving from Williams, forcing him to retire and be replaced by Tom Povall, but Weymouth held on for their third consecutive away victory.
