SIDMOUTH: Photography students impress with exhibition

By Laura Goldsbury Noy

Kennaway House is currently home to an exhibition of photography work produced by local ReVision photography students.

The exhibition is the fourth of its kind at Kennaway House and has once again been a huge success with the running time being extended by an extra three days.

The exhibition shows a variety of traditional cyanotypes - photos with a cyan-blue print - alongside black and white images and digital photography, all hand printed by the students themselves.

All of these have been composed and created on camera and then fine print techniques have been applied in order to produce images not manipulated by post camera effects.

All the photographs are very different and personal to the students who have taken a technique and applied it to their own work.

The students come from a variety of backgrounds and range from  just 14 years old to those in their late 70s.

The group is taught by photographer Gill Elliott, who runs a range of classes throughout East Devon and Dorset for people of all abilities.

Liz Rae has been a photography student for just one year and had several pieces on display in the exhibition.

She told The Weekender: “I had a difficult experience with other teachers but when I met Gill I was able to really develop my skills and learn more about photography. It has been great for my confidence as the group as a whole are so supportive and the teaching methods are really personal and tailored to the individual.

“I would rather photograph something than have no record of it at all but the pictures I’m really proud of, especially those on display, really spur me on to do other things.”

Gill Elliott, added: “Everyone is so pleased with their achievements, especially as some of the students have produced work for the exhibition within their initial ten week introductory programme.

“It is all about working together as well as working as an individual, and the groups I teach really support each other.

“The exhibition wouldn’t be together and such a success without everyone working so hard so thanks to all the students.”

ReVision is also pleased to announce that Michael Shaw, Sarah Davies, Pam Stirling and Sue Hendrick have gained their Licentiateship of the Royal Photographic Society, which is an internationally recognised qualification.

Following the exhibition at Kennaway House, ending on November 14th, there will be an exhibition of new students work at Boston Tea Party in Honiton from November 18th for six weeks.

Liz Penrose will be one of the new students exhibiting their work in Honiton later this month. She said: “I am really excited to display my work and hope people appreciate our exhibition.

“I joined ReVision to learn how to use my camera properly and I am inspired by what I can do, especially after learning so much in a short amount of time.”

ReVision classes are always conducted in an informal and supportive atmosphere with emphasis on each student’s growing confidence and personal development.
