9th November 2011LYME REGIS: Festival focuses on Legion anniversary
THE theme of this year’s annual Festival of Remembrance in Lyme Regis was the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.
Organised by the Lyme Regis branch of the Legion, the event was attended by over 100 people, including a number of civic guests and county officials.
Among those present were the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Sally Holman, accompanied by Mayoress Jane Whittington, the Mayor of Bridport, Councillor David Rickard, and the chairman of WestDorset District Council, Councillor Gillian Summers.
County chairman John Hurst was also present.
Legion history
Compere Philip Evans guided the audience through the history and achievements of the Royal British Legion since its formation in 1921 and highlighted the significance of the poppy as the international symbol of remembrance.
He also gave case studies of those who had been helped by the Legion over the years.
Music for the festival was provided by Lyme Regis Town Band, led by musical director John Powell, with contributions from 13 year-old singer Romana Burrough, of Axminster, saxophinst Jake Causley, from Hunters Lodge, and Mary and Nomad, who run Lyme Regis TV.
The Service of Remembrance was led by the Legion chaplain, the Reverend Jane Skinner, with the branch President, Mr Cecil Quick, delivering the Exhortation.
A drumhead was built on stage by Coporal Daniel Buckley, of the Royal Engineers and crew members of Lyme Regis RNLI.
A minute’s silence was observed as poppies fell from the ceiling while the Legion standards, carried by James Rice (Lyme Regis), Trish Forsey (Charmouth) and Sarah Horton (Bridport) were lowered.
Branch chairman Ken Whetlor thanked the audience and all those who had helped to make the festival a success.
• TWO minutes’ silence will be observed at the Lyme Regis War memorial in George’s Square at 11 am on Friday, November 11th.
Among those who will be laying wreaths will be Coporal Daniel Buckley, who will soon be retiring from the Royal Engineers after serving as a bomb disposal officer for 14 years, in a tribute to his fallen colleagues.
An Eternal Light Requiem, titled “A Reflection for Armistice Day”, will be staged at St Michael’s Parish Church at 7.30pm on Friday, November 11th, featuring the Sheldon Singers.
On Saturday, November 12th wreaths will be laid at the HMS Formidable grave in the cemetery at 10.30 am, followed by a ceremony at the Polish Air Force War Memorial in Anning Road at 11am.
The Remembrance Day Parade will assemble at Langmoor Gardens at 2.40pm on Sunday, November 13th, followed by a service at the parish church, starting at 3pm.
