14th October 2011WEST DORSET: She'Koyokh to perform at St Candida's
She’Koyokh are Britain’s best-known and highly regarded Klezmer and Balkan music band.
Band leader Susi Evans was a clarinettist at the Purcell School of Music, and met up with many of the eight Klezmer musicians when they played an inaugural concert for fun at the Royal Academy of Music where they were all studying. Since then, their band has completely taken off - they have travelled widely and made frequent appearances on television. The band name (pronounced she-koy-o) is a Yiddish expression meaning something like “nice one!” Their first appearance at Whitchurch five years ago was to a packed house, with standing room only. This year they have agreed to return to perform in St Candida’s Church on October 22nd to celebrate the inauguration of the ‘Friends of St Candida’.
On Tuesday, August 30, 'The Friends' was formally launched by their Patron, Lord Hall of Birkenhead (Tony Hall) with a talk on his life and work. He drew interesting parallels between his life at the BBC and at the Royal Opera House, giving the memorable example of how a news correspondent in a war zone and a soloist on stage in front of several thousand people, must both ‘get it right’ under pressure. He talked about the importance of the outreach work now undertaken by Covent Garden, seeking to bring opera to millions of people who would not otherwise have the experience. He is now Chair of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad and is determined to ensure that Britain delivers its promise to add a rich cultural dimension to the celebration of next year's Games in London. Given his interest in church architecture, and his connections with the village of Whitchurch Canonicorum, it is fitting that he has kindly agreed to be patron of ‘The Friends’.
She’koyokh will be playing Eastern European Jewish, Balkan and Gypsy music, full of high-energy and passion. The concert starts at 7.30 and is followed by a light supper. Tickets are £15 each, including supper and a glass of wine, and MUST be pre-booked as the concert is expected to sell out. Please contact Cynthia Bain - 01297 489629.
