14th October 2011CREWKERNE: Champion butchers
Barrett Bros Butchers of Crewkerne have won a Champion Award in the BPEX South West Awards, which recognises excellence in meat products.
Barrett Bros was one of many butchers in the region who put forward products at the BPEX roadshow at Sandy Park Conference Centre in Exeter last week.
From the 131 products put forward, 87 per cent received an award and 12 products were selected as champions.
Among them was Barrett Bros who won a Champion Award in the home-cured bacon category.
Due to the popularity with customers of the lightly smoked back bacon, the family-run butchers wanted to see how the product would fare with industry judges.
“Our bacon always does very well at these type of events so we were pleasantly surprised when we found out we’d received the Champion Award,” said third generation butcher Gary Pocock.
“Our customers have been telling us for many years that the lightly smoked back bacon is wonderful because it provides a middle ground between an unsmoked and a smoked product, which some people can find too salty.
“It’s also made on the premises every week along with a number of other cuts including our back dry cured rindless bacon, which won the Home Cured Bacon category at the roadshow last year.”
