13th October 2011DORCHESTER: General knowledge put to the test at quiz
Dorchester Social Stroke Club was set up for people who have suffered a stroke or other neurological disorders. It organises activities that aim to restore confidence often shattered by such illnesses, and assists in both social and speech rehabilitation.
Held in a stimulating environment, members receive physical and mental exercise. But most of all they have fun. And fun is definitely the order of the day when they hold their annual Fish and Chip Quiz Night in the Magna Community Room in Lubbecke Way. Bring your own drink, enjoy a fish and chip supper, and get those brains into gear is all that is required, and this year was no exception.
With tickets for this event a much sought-after commodity, the questions came thick and fast courtesy of quiz master extraordinaire, Barry White.
Attended by the Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Tess James, and her Consort Roland Tarr, the proceedings were watched over by question setter Anita Harries and her side-kick Anne Richards, both members of the Club.
With strictly no “phone a friend” allowed and internet access denied, each round was keenly contested, the odd answer queried and then ignored, and spellings of every kind popped up here and there.
Four Square ran out the eventual winners, with their prizes presented by the mayor, who thanked everyone for turning up and helping raise money for the Club.
Tailenders were the Salsa Van, whose breakdown on the way was matched only by the obvious breakdown in their IQ. But never mind. Social Stroke Club organiser Jackie Sherfield gave them some halloween chocolates for their efforts, countless raffle prizes were drawn and snatched up, and everyone went home to rest the old grey matter for another year.
