13th October 2011DORCHESTER: Harvest poems impress judges at Sunninghill
By Anita Harries
National Poetry Day has engaged millions of people with poetry through a whole range of live events and web-based activities across the country.
The children of Sunninghill School in Dorchester were very much a part of these celebrations as they held their very own internal poetry competition.
Using the very appropriate theme of Harvest to encourage and inspire, children in both the Pre Prep and Prep departments of the school wrote their own poems to be entered into a whole school competition. And the standard of these poems was quite exceptional, giving the judge Rachel Saddler, the school’s new full time librarian, a real headache in choosing the winners.
Head of English, Mrs Fearnley, said: “There were wonderfully creative entries across the school, with poems of a very high standard coming from each age group.”
The Prep winner was Natasha Walker of Form Eight with her beautiful “Harvest Approaches Once More”, a truly stunning piece and a very worthy first place. Second place went to Gabriella Bailey, whilst Ollie Batt came in third. Ayanna Caffrey came out as victor in the Pre Prep group, with Bonnie Davenport and Olivia Mallows coming second and third respectively.
Special commendations went to Fran Hayes, Ellie Watts, and Patrick Taylor.
And Sunninghill Prep now boosts an enlarged library area, relocated in the main hub of the school.
It has made choosing books much easier for all of the children as they can now browse the wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction books with ease.
A new website has made the issuing of books much easier, and the new facility has been further improved with a number of Form Eight children taking on the role of junior librarian.
Every child in the school has access to this library, and are able to check their understanding of the books they have read by completing a quiz.
This forms part of the Accelerated Reading programme used throughout the school to improve reading standards.
New full time librarian Rachel Saddler said: “The new library also houses our collection of reference books which the students will be able to make use of when completing their school work.”
