5th October 2011BRIDPORT: Read Easy service to open soon
A NEW service, teaching adults to read, began life in Bridport at the weekend with a volunteer training day and a donation from Magna Housing Association.
The Read Easy Bridport group will soon be operating in the town, following the success of groups in Dorchester and Weymouth.
A total of 12 volunteers attended a training day on Saturday along with Magna Housing Association who visited to hand over a cheque for £1,250.
Read Easy is a service for adults who have reading difficulties working with people who have learning difficulties, those for whom English is not their first language and others who, for one reason or another, came through the education system without being able to read, several of whom come from the gypsy and traveller community.
Sessions are run in public venues, to avoid a traditional classroom environment, and volunteers are matched to best suit each client.
Each client is given a ‘Yes we can read’ book and has their own dedicated volunteer coach. Co-ordinator Vee Driscoll said that students in their 70s had learnt to read in other parts of the county, proving its never too old to start.
Vee Driscoll said: “I think this is a service that will be much appreciated in Bridport, I have spoken to a number of organisations and they have said this is something they’ve needed.
“It’s wonderful to be doing something wonderful for people in Bridport, I’m very proud to be part of it.”
The donation from Magna Housing Association will be spent on tuition books and promotion costs of the group.
