29th September 2011BRIDPORT FOOTBALL: Six-hit Bees need to be more ruthless
BRIDPORT manager Trevor Senior was satisfied that his team were never in any danger of losing against Wessex League Division One Andover New Street side in last Saturday’s 6-3 F A Vase tie, but felt they had not been ruthless enough.
“We should have had double figures to be fair, the chances we created, and I was disappointed with the three goals against us.”
The victory ensured the club of £700 prize money, and they now visit Christchurch in the First Round Proper on October 22nd.
Senior said: “We should have won more comfortably. To be fair they started quite brightly, but the pitch was not the greatest to be fair, it looked okay from the side but was quite bobbly, so we couldn’t get it down and pass it very well but we did okay.
“We had three or four early chances but we wanted to take that extra touch and with the pitch being uneven we fluffed them.”
Eventually Matt Condliffe and Dan Wise scored twice within two minutes on the half-hour and then the hosts had a man sent-off for handball from which Wise added a second after his penalty had been saved to give Bridport a comfortable 3-0 interval lead.
“I said at half-time this could be a cricket score if we do it properly and keep moving the ball around.
“They are not very good but if we don’t kill them off they might just get back into it, and that’s exactly what happened.”
Andover pulled one back in the 56th from a breakaway before creating two more good chances, the second in the 67th minute when Sam Charles hit the bar from which the hosts broke away and scored again to narrow the deficit to one goal.
“Both their goals came from breakaways and I’m thinking how on earth have they got it back to 3-2; we should be out of sight!”
Senior changed his formation for this match to counteract Andover’s direct style of play, switching son Chris into a holding midfield position; a move that was a success, but the change meant leaving out Adam Symes.
“I left Adam out, not because he had done anything wrong, just so that I could try Chris in the holding midfield role, which worked pretty well. It’s something I have been thinking about for a while, and to be fair when Adam came on he responded in the right way.”
Symes came on for Russell Legg who had to be replaced on 20 minutes with a hamstring injury and Senior said: “His first couple of contributions livened us up a bit to be honest, and he went on to have a good game.
On reflection the Bees boss said: “It was disappointing to let three goals in, and if we had been ruthless we should have buried them.
“ I think we were too over elaborate and tried to score good goals, but as Jimmy Greaves said ’You don’t need to score good goals, you just need to be a good goalscorer’.
“From a confidence point of view however it was good to hit six.”
