DORCHESTER: Made of Money taster session

Made of Money is a project set up by Dorchester Poverty Action.

Last week Wendy Hilton and Nikki Singleton from Made of Money hosted a taster session for professionals to help them understand how the project could help and encourage their clients to come to a further two taster sessions which will be offered to the general public.

Hundreds of local people have debts amounting to tens of thousands of pounds, quite apart from their mortgage.

Made of Money is there to guide people through periods of financial crisis by advising and answering many questions.

How can you take more control of your money? How can you talk about money in your family? How can you involve your family in a plan of action? How well do you know lending rates?

Having more money may well be the answer to some problems - but it is not always the right answer, and it’s certainly not the only answer.

Friendly money management can help everyone, no matter what their money problems are or how they started. And Made of Money does just that. It is a free service and can achieve a great deal in a relatively short time. It won’t give you financial advice, but will show you how to manage your money by becoming money aware, self aware, and family aware. Learning from both experienced course leaders and fellow participants you will be taught how to use budgeting to help avoid debt and get out of debt. You will look at your buying habits and how these can be easily changed to assist you in taking more control of your money and your life. You will come to understand how financial worries can lead to stresses on your relationships with both your children and your partner, and everyone in your family will be shown how to talk, learn, and listen. Made of Money starts with an introductory session, followed by six other sessions, each covering different topics, all aimed at making sure you go away with more knowledge, more awareness, more control, and more attitude.

Those who attended this session at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester took part in a series of exercises offered to course participants, gaining an insight into how problems are dealt with, discussions stimulated and lines of communication opened.

The six week course is very relaxed and informal, but brings to the fore the impact money has on our lives and the sometimes difficult consequences any problems, however small, can create. No pressure is placed on anyone, no criticisms voiced, just a genuine desire to help.

Two taster sessions for the general public will be held at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester on Tuesday, October 4th from 10am until 12 noon, and on Wednesday, October 12th from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. If you think Made of Money could help you, or anyone you know, please go along and find out more. More information can be obtained by emailing [email protected], or telephoning 01305 262045.
