9th September 2011SOUTH PETHERTON: South Petherton winds up for the big day
THE FINAL countdown to carnival week in South Petherton started with the family fun day on the recreation ground held on Sunday.
This would normally be when the carnival royalty were crowned but the committee decided to do things differently this year. Chairman Dave Williams explained that rather than put two relative strangers together to lead the procession, they wanted it to be a mates situation. Throughout the fun day, friends were encouraged to put their names down and at the end Scarlett Purefoy and Sarah Foan were appointed as this year’s carnival VIPs.
The day itself was full of the usual fun activities, such as the inflatable games, stalls and classic vehicles, with the Scouts doing their cook up. The Ariel Atom was on display, brought along by Steve Rooke, always a crowd pleaser wherever it goes and draw tickets were on sale for a ride in the famous vehicle, thanks to the generosity of the company.
Orchard Gymnastics, run by husband and wife team Barry and Karen Phelan from South Petherton, gave a demonstration of their skills. The group has just won British Gymnastics Club of the Year 2011. They are based in Yeovil with a satellite club in Taunton and attract young people from tots upwards and adults from across the region as well as a few from the village. Coaching director Barry Phelan is a Commonwealth Games finalist and GB Team Gym Coach.
This Saturday September 10th will be carnival day, with the line of coins through the village and a photographic exhibition in the Blake Hall. There will be line dancing in the town centre at 6.45pm followed by the carnival band at 7.15pm before the procession which leaves the recreation ground at 7.30pm.
