By Marion Draper
ALL SAINTS Church in Merriott was packed to the seams with parishioners and visiting members of the clergy for the institution of a husband and wife team, who will cover the villages of Dinnington, Hinton St George, and Lopen as well as Merriott.
The Reverend Julia Hicks and the Reverend Bob Hicks are now officially the rector and associate vicar for the benefice. The special service was held on Monday, September 5th, conducted by the Bishop of Taunton, the Right Reverend Peter Maurice, the Archdeacon of Taunton, the Venerable John Reed and the Rural Dean, the Reverend Andrew Tatham.
The couple pledged to serve the benefice as joint stewards and were officially welcomed by the churchwardens and presented with their symbols of ministry by their parishioners; a jug of water to bring new Christians to baptism, a Bible and book of common worship, a jug of oil each for healing the sick, and the bread and wine.
Following the service, refreshments were served in the Tithe Barn for the congregation to meet and greet their new ministers.
