24th August 2011WEST BAY: Jurassic monsters spotted in West Bay!
By Tom Glover
A THREE-DAY fossil and dinosaur workshop at West Bay came to a close with a Jurassic Monster Musical Procession.
The free ‘Rocks Beats Scissors’ event, a joint project from the Jurassic Coast team, the National Trust and the Bridport Museum, had hundreds of visitors during its time at the Salt House, West Bay.
Visitors, both local and holidaymakers, got to make masks, dig for fossils and discover more about the Jurassic Coast before joining in with the finale parade.
A group of local musicians headed the parade, children joined in carrying their own creations and adults helped carry a giant model Plesiosaur which had been completed over the three days with the help of local artist Eileen Haste.
Also entering into the spirit of things were Bridport Mayor and Mayoress Dave and Anne Rickard, who donned dinosaur heads for the procession.
The parade led to the West Bay pier where poems written by the children, on the theme of the coast, were read out. The winning poem, ‘Old and New’, was written by 11-year-old Tommy Chatten. Tommy won a personal guided fossil walk from Sam Scriven, Earth Sciences Advisor for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site Team, for his efforts.
Bridport Museum Curator, Emily Hicks, said: “It has been really good, we have had a few hundred visitors over the week, mainly younger children, and they have been really interested in learning about fossils.
“They have all been learning and having fun at the same time and the parade was the perfect way to finish things off.”
