SIDMOUTH: New play area

Adrenalin-seeking youngsters will be flocking to Sidmouth’s Ham area this Sunday when the newly-improved playground will be officially opened.

An open invitation is extended to all residents to the grand opening, led by Councillor Stuart Hughes, chairman of Sidmouth Town Council.

Following consultation with local parents and children last September,  new attractions have been installed, including climbing rocks, a basket swing, a tall spinning ride and a thrilling zip wire.

Local children helped re-design the play area, and hundreds of Sidmouth residents chose which one of three designs they most wanted to see installed.

Members of Sidmouth Town Council and representatives from this parents’ group have been working closely with East Devon District Council’s officers to make improvements to the play area. Between September and December, the parents and EDDC officers worked with 82 children at four schools in Sidmouth to find out their favourite playground activities.

The improvements to the play area cost £40,000,  half of which came from Section 106 funding (money from developers for developments in the area), £10,000 from Sidmouth Town Council, with the Sid Vale Association’s Keith Owen Fund paying the remaining £10,000.
