WEST BAY: Beach baptism is a 'joy to behold'

HUNDREDS watched as the Bishop of Sherborne baptised Christians in the sea at West Bay during his recent pilgrimage.

The Bishop of Sherborne, The Right Reverend Dr Graham Kings, carried out the service at West Beach during his visit as part of the St Aldhelm’s Pilgrimage.

During the service four people were baptised and a further eight were confirmed in their faith.

The Bishop used a boat as an altar to carry out the service, watched by an estimated 250 onlookers. The St Mary’s Church band provided music for the evening and the Bridport Lions ran a barbecue.

The Reverend Peter Edwards acted as chaplain to the Bishop for the service. He said: “It was fantastic. We had wonderful weather and it was a real joy to behold. The service was the highlight of the week for me.
