WEYMOUTH: Tuba soloist goes back to school

DORSET Sinfonia are staging are concert in Weymouth which will feature the music of Vaughan Williams, Schubert and Beethoven.

It will be held at All Saints School, Wyke Regis, on Wednesday July 13th at 7.30pm when one of the main attractions will bass tuba soloist Matthew Blunt, himself a former All Saints pupil.

He studied music from the age of six, won a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in 2008 and is now studying for a degree with Patrick Harrild of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Matthew has already won numerous award, has a busy recording career and has played live on national radio.

Sinfonia chairman Alban Blunt said that among music chosen for the concert includes Vaughan Williams concerto for bass tuba with Matthew Blunt as soloist, Schubert’s Symphony No 8 “the unfinished” and Beethoven’s Fidelio overture.

He added: “ The Dorset Sinfonia started life as the Weymouth and District Arts Centre Music Group way back in 1958.

“In 1962 the name was changed to the Weymouth Arts Centre Orchestra and played under the musical direction of Harvey Easton for eight years until his retirement in 1971. For the next few years the orchestra had a variety of conductors until Mrs Angela Nankivell conducted her first concert with the orchestra in May 1980. Under her direction the orchestra prospered and concerts were given twice a year in many and various locations.

“In January 2010 we were pleased to welcome David Ansell who has taken over the baton as our conductor and musical director.

“He has encouraged and led us through new music over the weeks and we have performed a number of concerts under his baton at Weymouth Bay Methodist Church.

“His skill and enthusiasm are infectious and we have all been greatly encouraged by his youthful humour, brilliant analysis and professional direction. Because of our wider catchment the orchestra has changed its name to The Dorset Sinfonia.”

Tickets for the concert are available in advance for £6 from Jennie Balston on 01305 775642. They will be £8 on the door. Under 14s get free entry.
