14th October 2011ILMINSTER: Barnardo’s help
CHILDREN’S charity Barnardo’s South West has brought its “Revolutions” classroom and workshop contained within a pair of specially-adapted pods, to Ilminster.
Schools, colleges, youth clubs and other venues are invited to take advantage of motor mechanics courses available to young people who are at risk of dropping out of education - offering individual support together with important life skills including writing CVs and preparing for interviews.
Barnardo’s staff include two mechanics and a project worker. Together, they offer a Level 1 course in motor mechanics and can cater for up to ten young people at a time, during the school day or at evenings and weekends. The pods contain four engines with workbenches and tools, as well as a learning suite featuring access to laptops, an interactive “smartboard” and an audio system.
Additional support includes mentors, life skills workshops, literacy and numeracy classes, support with returning to school and improving attendance, and signposting to other services.
