17th October 2012WEYMOUTH: Swansong exhibition for popular local artist
A PAINT-encrusted easel supporting a half-finished picture provided a poignant tribute in a “swansong” exhibition of works by the late Weymouth artist Trevor Lawrence.
One of Weymouth’s great characters, Lawrence died suddenly in July just a week before his 68th birthday.
He left behind a striking legacy of expressionist painting depicting his vision of people in tenement-style buildings.
The exhibition of nearly 50 paintings is currently running at the Leighton Gallery near Hope Square and owner Martin Leighton said: “It is appropriate to hold the exhibition on the edge of winter because it was Trevor’s favourite time of the year when he could see people’s homes with the lights on.
“This was an inspiration for his work, particularly the Helen Lane area which has a rich history.”
Lawrence, who was also a talented musician, once told the View: “Painting is my wife but music is one of my mistresses.”
