SEATON: Seaton Lions help nine local groups

By Laura Goldsbury Noy

Members of Seaton and District Lions Club held an evening of celebration when they donated money to nine local causes.

Known for their generosity in the town, the Lions group presented a number of cheques at Seaton Town Hall last Tuesday at a special presentation evening, supporting a number of worthy causes.

Presentations were made to Seaton Town Football Club for £100 and a further £400 was invested in the club’s youth division.

National charity Whizz Kids received £250 toward providing specialist mobility equipment for young people up to the age of 24, with each piece costing up to £6,000.

The next to receive their cheque were representatives of the Seaton Mother’s Union, who received £250 toward their ongoing work.

They have knitted over 6,000 colourful squares which will be sent to Zambia for children to create their own colourful blankets and throws; the money donated will contribute toward postage costs.

Seaton and District Club for the visually impaired received £150 which will be spent on a special tea and outing to Colyton Methodist Church in August, whilst the West of England School and College for the blind and partially sighted received £750 toward their mini bus to enable the school to take children out on a regular basis more freely.

Seventeen-year-old Mary Kellam also received a cash boost of £250, which will support an upcoming travelling project to Zimbabwe led by African Impact.

Mary will be volunteering at a medical clinic and orphanage, supporting HIV and aids education as well as wildlife work such as lion conservation.

Seaton Majorettes also benefited from the Lions’ charitable fundraising when they received £500 toward their new ‘ice outfits’ which will be revealed at Seaton’s annual illuminated carnival in September.

The final presentation was made to Angie Baldwin of the Royal National Institute for the Blind who came to receive £399, which will help with the purchase of specialist video magnifier equipment to help with reading for those who are partially sited.

Seaton Lions Ladies also jumped in to support local causes, helping organisations and charities such as Macmillan Nurses and Seaton in Bloom and presenting Carole Manley of Seaton Voice with £400 toward the town hall’s lighting.

Seaton Lions President Dennis Morgan, who presented the cheques, said: “We love to give money back to our working patch and support as much as we can.

“We are very pleased to support such a number of local organisations and groups, however big or small the cause.”
