BRIDPORT: Work on Borough Gardens gets underway

PLANS to rejuvenate the Borough Gardens have got underway in Bridport.

Members of the community group charged with giving the gardens a boost have finished their first survey on the future of the gardens

Residents were asked for ideas on how to improve the ‘secret garden’ off the Tanyard and Gundry Lane during a five-hour consultation on June 13th.

Suggestions put forward by residents included adding plants which are bee friendly, more colourful and scented.

The community group is hoping to give the area a boost and make it more attractive for residents and workers on their lunch breaks to relax in.

The move follows a request in the town plan to enhance the garden, which has been maintained for the past five years but not improved.

The group believe it will take up to two years to complete the garden.

Councillor Sarah Williams said the work would make the garden a more pleasant experience for people.

She said: “It will take at least a year, possible two to finish. This year we are planting Jubilee coloured plants and then over the winter we are going to be re-designing it.

“The consultation with residents was held because we want to get people’s ideas and make it more a  pleasant place for people to come and enjoy.

“Its time has come to be more cherished and loved once again.”

The Community Project to improve the gardens has been set up by Bridport Town Council in partnership with housing group Magna, residents and landscape architect Aileen Shackell.

The work will be conducted by the town council alongside volunteers.

The money has been earmarked in the town council’s budget – although councillors at the consultation were unsure of the overall cost.
