A concert at St Mary’s Church, Netherbury, was held to mark the 10th anniversary of the church choir as well as celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, London Olympics and mark the debut for new Musical Director Nigel Edwards.
The focus was on music written in the United Kingdom.
The first half explored the British sacred music for unaccompanied choirs.
The second half saw a programme of secular music, again the focus being music from the UK.
The final section commenced with the choir’s favourite Come Live With Me and was followed by, two of three, Vaughan Williams’ challenging Shakespeare Songs, with an eerie Full Fathom Five.
The concert was concluded with Traditional Songs arranged by John Rutter with a superb O Waly Waly led by an inspired soprano line.
The concert was graced by interludes in each half featuring guitarist Sarah Freestone with a Bagatelle by William Walton.
Although performing many old favourites it was noticeable that Nigel Edwards has made his mark with the choir with changes to dynamics and pace, together with the introduction of interesting new material.
