2nd May 2012DORCHESTER BOXING: Dorchester duo show their skills
TWO Dorchester & District Boxing Club members showed their prowess at the latest Sturminster Tourney.
Liam Legg, (aged 11) and his opponent Tommy Weeks (10) from Sturminster Newton ABC received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd at the end of their skills bout which opened the eighteen bout bill.
The pace was as electric as the Roxy Music played as they entered the ring, with both boxers showing off their individual skills and experience, and although only a skills bout, both showed good combinations and solid defences; every punch they threw at each other just came flying back.
They worked skilfully behind well timed jabs and chugged away busily for the three rounds much to the delight of the spectators who showed their appreciation for their outstanding, courageous and positive displays.
Skills contests are non decision bouts, where both boxers’ arms are raised at the final bell. The special bouts allow young boxers to develop experience and gain confidence in the ring.
Henry Jeff making his debut, weighing in at 65kilos faced Zak Harrhy from Cwmcarn ABC, who at two kilos lighter had a five bouts record.
The first round saw Harrhy set a furious pace looking for an early stoppage, but the pace suited Jeff who is fast, lean, and a hungry boxer who can spar, skip and fire on all cylinders for hours, and it looked that he had won him the round.
Jeff had worked hard for this bout, and a tiring Harrhy showed his experience and defensive cleverness in the second round by taking Jeff’s vigorous punches on his gloves, as he covered up to protect himself.
When Jeff beat Harrhy to the punch in the third, the Welsh boxer began walking through punches to claim the bout.
Coach Ben Geyser said: “Henry can look back with pride and satisfaction at his first defence, showing full bodied resilience as he soaked up heavy punches from the much more experienced and stronger boxer.”
