ILMINSTER: Kids in space!

By Marion Draper

ILMINSTER Youth Theatre Act One were delightful in their short but sweet performance of The First Kids in Space at the Warehouse Theatre.

As the youngest members of the theatre, they did extremely well, delivering their lines clearly and with character and obviously enjoying the story they were telling.

The show was a space adventure musical by Debbie Campbell, directed by Lucy Driver with Sonya Shaw and Sarah Quick as assistant producers. Lighting and sound was handled by Sam Poole and Brian Perkins with additional music from cast members Emily Dixon - who composed her own space exploration theme - and Tyler McKay adding atmosphere on drums.

A group of space cadets flew to the moon and were sabotaged by a group of out of control androids. Luckily there were two androids, who were misfits and managed to fix the others and everyone got home safely in the end.

It was a jaunty tale throughout, even the bad androids were mischievous rather than sinister, and the songs and dances were all very upbeat and entertaining.

The basic set was well designed with the planets hanging from the ceiling and defined areas for the pilot and crew, the scientists and a space café with appropriate set dressings.

The costumes were great, thanks to a great deal of parental input.

They say a sign of a good show is to leave your audience wanting more. This short show felt as if it should have a second act, so they were definitely doing something right!

I am a proud mum of a 'specs'! They all did fantastically and it great that children get to experience doing a performatnce in a 'real' theatre. Well done and thank you to the organisers.
