18th April 2012BRIDPORT FOOTBALL: Thirds fate in the hands of others
Busy Bees gain useful point
Bridport Reserves 1 Holt United 1
BRIDPORT Reserves playing their third game in five days gained a good point against high riding Holt United and in doing so stopped a hat-trick of defeats.
Having unexpectedly lost at Blandford United on Easter Monday, Bridport lost 2-0 at home to fourth placed Wincanton Town on Thursday night and so were hoping to stop the rot against a notoriously tough Holt side.
In a goal less first-half in which both sides had chances, Jack Scovell having the Bees best opportunity.
The Bulls drew first blood on the hour when Chris Payne took advantage of a poor back pass, but Darren Watts levelled for the Bees with 15 minutes left with a fine volley from the edge of the area.
Both sides continued to create chances in the final minutes and Jamie Morgan forced the Holt keeper into a good save before Holt missed a good opportunity to take all the points in the closing stages.
Joint manager Steve Crabb said: “It was a fair result at the end of the day with both sides having chances, and it was good to stop the rot after a couple of defeats.”
The busy Bees fixtures continued with a visit to the Bob Lucas Stadium to take on Weymouth Reserves on Tuesday, before another tough game on Saturday when they entertain Chickerell United (ko 3pm).
Bridport Thirds 2 Lychett Red Triangle 0
A REGULATION victory over struggling Lychett Red Triangle maintains Bridport Thirds quest for promotion from Dorset League Division Two, but with one game to go their fate is in the hands of those around them.
The win sees them move within two points of long time leaders Corfe Mullen who have played a game less, but with 11 Signal Regiment and Milborne Sports having four and five games in hand respectively, they can still be beaten to one of the two promotion spots if they win all their fixtures.
However these two meet each other on the last game of the season, whilst the soldiers still have leaders Corfe Mullen to play, so nothing is ruled out.
The Bees should have had a hatful against Lychett, and only a fine display by their keeper and some woeful finishing prevented that. As it was it became a frustrating but comfortable victory with a goal in each half from Chris Gale and Chris Symes.
The Bees welcomed the return of new father Lee Cuff in goal which restored confidence at the back, but he was rarely tested in a game that was very much one-way.
Bridport took the lead with a good move that involve Tom Marsh and Gary Bulman before Symes put Bulman in down the right and he rolled the ball across the goal for Gale to convert.
Despite countless opportunities the score remained until midway through the second half when Symes drilled the ball across the keeper into the corner of the net from the edge of the box just moments after missing with an identical chance.
Assistant manager Andy Hitchcock who was once again impressed with 17-year-old central defender Luke King said: “It was pretty routine, and their ‘keeper kept them in the game.
“We need to beat Corfe Castle on Saturday and then can only wait on the other results to see what happens.”
