9th March 2012PERRY STREET LEAGUE: Shepton record ends at Misterton
CHALLENGE CUP SEMI-FINALS
Lyme Regis 4 Ilminster Reserves 2
GOALS from Bendan Craggs and Dan Vining couldn’t save Ilminster as they crashed out of the Challenge cup at the semi-final stage at the Davey Fort.
The lively Craggs pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time after Lyme had gone 2-0 up early on.
Pick-of-the-league goalkeeper Ashley Caddy atoned for his own foul as he made a fine save to keep out a Criag Rice penalty early after the restart and Lyme went 3-1 ahead soon after.
The Seasiders were then reduced to 10 men for the last 32 minutes as Caddy was shown a second yellow card by referee Simon White.
But it was Lyme who scored next when Paul Retter nodded the ball past his own golakeeper George Scutt. Dan Vining netted a late consolation for the visitors
South Petherton 2 Crewkerne Town 1
FOR the second week in succession Crewkerne Town were beaten by two goals in the last 10 minutes.
The visitors took a first-half lead when Pethy ‘keeper Jardine MacKenzie, making an unscheduled appearance after his retirement at the start of the season, brought down livewire Ed Butcher in the box and Gavin Charles tucked away the penalty.
Both sides then missed chances before Dean Smith lobbed home the leveler in the 85th minute and a Lee Richards volley was deflected home to earn the hosts their first appearance in the final for five years.
PREMIER
Combe Reserves 1 Beaminster 1
BEAMINSTER’S hopes of securing the Premier Division runners-up spot took a dent as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Combe Reserves at Slades Cross.
Beaminster took the lead midway through the first-half courtesy of an own goal by Stuart Bicknell.
But the Saints rallied and salvaged a point when Simon Vincent netted 10 minutes from time.
Merriott Rovers 1 Farway United 4
A KIRSTEN Parkhouse goal couldn’t save Merriott from a hefty home defeat at the hands of Farway United. Scott Burrough and Bradley King both scored twice for the Devonians.
The result sees the Rovers drop into the bottom two with relegation now looking like a real possibility.
Perry Street 4 West & Middle Chinnock 1
GOALS from Ben Stevens, Jamie Roberts, Jason Newbury and Kane Ellis helped Perry Street climb out of the bottom two for the first time this season following a 4-1 win over drop favourites West & Middle Chinnock at Tatworth.
Mark Cawley scored the consolation for the Chinnocks’ whose 53-year-old defender Neil Cochrane was booked by referee Lance Turner for the first time in his 40-year playing career!
DIVISION ONE
SAM Dibling scored twice to move joint top of the PSL goalscoring charts and ensure Barrington will have to continue to keep an eye on the Division One trap after they went down 4-2 at Millwey Rise.
At the other end of the table Leigh Richardson scored a hat-trick as Forton Rangers beat Perry Street by the same score.
Meanwhile the promotion battle at Unity Lane ended in victory for Misterton with Paul Richards and Ken Forbes netting in a 2-0 win which ended opponents’ Shepton Beauchamp’s 18-game unbeaten league record and dented their Premier Division aspirations.
DIVISION TWO
THERE were plenty of goals to be had at Wadham School where Crewkerne Town Reserves edged home 5-4 in the derby game with Crewkerne Rangers.
Tom Broome scored twice in the last five minutes to give Rangers hope. Earlier Mike Traynor had also netted a brace for the visitors who maintained their perfect away league form.
Mark Whaites was another of the day’s two-goal heroes as South Petherton came from behind to retain their top spot after a nervy 2-1 win at Uplyme.
Down at the bottom a Matt Pile goal earned Charmouth a 1-0 win over Chard Rangers and relegated Hinton in the process.
DIVISION THREE
A last-gasp Ian Anderson goal salvaged a point for Chard United at Combe A but the gap at the top was extended to five points as Waytown Hounds won 4-2 at West & Middle Chinnock Reserves
Over at Seavington Luso-Chard’s goals had a Polish flavour with Artur Jakaszek (2) and Slavek Sedlek finding the net in 4-2 victory over bottom-of-the-table Forton Rangers Reserves whose double came from Tom Melhuish.
Winsham United Reserves’ hopes of beating the drop were boosted by an impressive 3-2 win over in-form Millwey Rise Reserves at Baker’s Field. Richard White scored twice for the Winsh who remain unbeaten at home in the league.
Drimpton’s recent revival ended with a 4-3 reverse at fellow strugglers Hawkchurch United. Adam Chant took his tally to seven in five with the opener but Drimpton are still without an away league win in almost two years.
DIVISION FOUR
A second-half hat-trick from Wayne Stanton helped Thorncombe Reserves to the top-spot for the first time this season.
Paul Male and James Tunnicliffe also netted for the Thorns who cruised past Chard Rangers Reserves 5-0 at Jocelyn Park.
Meanwhile goals from Keith Tovey and top-scorer Ian Banfield keeps Chard United Reserves very much in the promotion hunt after a 2-0 win over Combe B.

TOMORROW’S PREVIEW
KNOCK-OUT CUPS
ALL eyes will be on South Petherton as they attempt to reach the final of the Somerset Intermediate Cup.
Standing in the way of Pethy are Freshford United from the Trowbridge & District League Division One.
The hosts, who disposed of West & Middle Chinnock 2-0 in round one, boast a seemingly water-tight defence which has conceded just nine goals in their 11 league matches and are of course the current cup holders.
But The Magpies have shown consideredable improvement after a dodgy start to the season and will head north brimming full of confidence.
Back in the PSL and Ilminster Colts entertain Shepton Beauchamp in an Arthur Gage Cup quarter-final at the Rec. A month ago this would have looked an away banker but fortunes have changes for both teams in recent weeks.
The Colts have drawn two and lost one of their last three whilst Shepton have been knocked out of the Somerset Intermediate Cup, lost their unbeaten league record and had their long-running unbeaten home record come under serious threat in the same period.
A trip to Unity Lane to take on Misterton in the semi-finals awaits the winners.
On paper all four Jack Venn Cup ties appeared weighted towards the host teams. Thorncombe entertain already-relegated Hinton, South Petherton Reserves should have too much for Misterton Reserves.
The other two could be closer with Chard Rangers heading west to take on Pymore whilst the tie of the round is at Henhayes where Crewkerne Town Reserves entertain Dowlish & Donyatt.
The Tigers are still chasing an impressive triple but conversely have won just one of their last five games at home.
Dowlish for their part have found the net 25 times in their last four outings - anything could happen!
Back in the league Ilminster Reserves, Winsham Un ited and Crewkerne Town will all be out to press their claim of a top two finish in the Premier Division.
Having beaten their opponents twice already this season Ilminster should come out on top when they entertain Farway United whilst Winsham and Crewkerne clash at Baker’s Field.
After a trio of impressive wins Crewkerne have slipped from winning positions to 11th hour defeats in each of the their last two matches.
Manager Nick Murphy will be looking for an improvement tomorrow it what looks likely to be a close encounter.
At the other end of the table Perry Street, no doubt buoyed by last weekend’s 4-1 win over drop rivals West & Middle Chinnock, head off to Beaminster.
With the top two in cup-tie action a win at home against strugggling Beaminster Reserves will see Forton Rangers leap two places to the top-spot.
It looks likely - Rangers have hit eight in a week in two wins at their Forton Lane Ground home whilst Beaminster are without a win in seven.
Barrington will attempt to put more distance between themselves and the bottom two when they travel to mid-table Perry Street Reserves.
It’s a similar story for Crewkerne Rangers as they travel to Uplyme in the only game in Division Two.
In Division three an eight-game unbeaten run has given Combe A an outside chance of sneaking a promotion spot.
The Saints travel to Oxleaze to face a West & Middle Chinnocks Reserves’ outfit who are without a home win since early November.
Elsewhere Chard United must break a stuttering run that has brought just one goal and one point from their last three games when they entertain Luso-Chard at Jocelyn Park tomorrow.
Down at the bottom the games are running out for Drimpton who could really do with taking something from tomorrow’s visit by Millwey Rise Reserves.
The same is true for Shepton Reserves who entertain Hawkchurch United.
Down in Division Four Chard United Reserves will break back into the top two with a win at Barrington Reserves.
New leaders Thorncombe Reserves should secure their top spot with three points from the local-derby at Hawkchurch United Reserves.
