OTTERY ST MARY: Poetry Stones memorial set for launch

A provisional date has been set for the official launch of a memorial honouring one of Ottery’s most famous sons.

The Coleridge Memorial Project hope that Easter Monday, April 9th, will see the unveiling of the Poetry Stones, which will see one of Samuel Coleridge Taylor’s poems engraved on stones leading to the King’s School.

The Poetry Stones project was launched in 2011 and now £5,000 has been raised to fund the project, which will see the words to Coleridge’s Kubla Kahn engraved on stones forming a new path approximately 70 metres long.

Funding for the project has come from the Making It Local funding scheme from the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, from the Heritage Lottery Fund and from members of the community.

Funds are now being raised to purchase two interpretive display panels to be erected near the stones to explain their significance.
