23rd February 2012WEYMOUTH: Ferry sailings move to Poole
STRUCTURAL problems with Condor Ferries’ berth in Weymouth has forced some sailings to be switched to Poole until at least February 27th.
Condor said it was moving its sailings because of “mutual concerns” with Weymouth Harbour over the structural integrity of part of the berth which is understood to involve cracks in the harbour wall and a drop in the quay surface.
Weymouth and Portland transport spokesman Councillor Christine James said: “It is a bit of a blow for Condor to have to go to Poole.
“I have been led to believe that it is only a short term problem which can be solved.
“I believe that the problem is linked to recent bad weather, shifting harbour floor conditions and the effect of boat engines on the berth area.”
Emergency work is being carried out on the berth, passengers were contacted about the change of port and Condor operations director Captain Fran Collins said: “The safety of our passengers and crew is always our highest priority and we have taken this step to help sustain our lifeline ferry services between the Channel Islands and the UK.
“We are working closely with Weymouth Harbour to understand the extent of this issue and are in close cooperation with Poole Harbour Commissioners to make sure the change of port goes as smoothly as possible.”
