WEYMOUTH FOOTBALL: King looking forward to the future with Terras

BRENDON King is looking forward to signing a long term contract that will allow him and his assistant Matt Groves to move Weymouth Football Club back up the football pyramid.

The pair who watched new signing Mark Ford come off the bench to grab a brace in the final minutes to beat Banbury United on Saturday are currently in talks with chairman George Rolls and the directors, and are expected to sign in the next few days.

King said: “We’ve been discussing it with the board since the beginning of the season and we’ve got a three to five year plan in place as it is, but they would like us to sign to give the club some stability.”

“Whilst results this season have been indifferent and patchy, the board have been happy with the duo’s performances off and on field and King was quick to praise the board for allowing them to run the team without interference. He also had a word to say about the odd few critics who are ready to pounce when things don’t run smoothly.

“There’s been no pressure on us to be fair, we’re just going on and getting the job done. People who know me, know that I’m a winner and don’t accept losing easily; and I don’t expect my players to.

“At the end of the day you’re not going to please everyone and that’s the nature of the beast, but I think people can see what we are trying to do. It’s never easy especially at a club like Weymouth Football Club who are still a big club.

“We are trying to do the right thing as we see it, but you’re not going to please everybody, but people don’t see everything that’s involved behind the scenes.”

Reflecting on last Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Banbury United which saw debutant Ford send the football-starved home fans happy with two late goals, King said: “The win was no more than we deserved, we created quite a few opportunities especially in the second-half.

“The first-half was very scrappy. The swirling wind was causing havoc and both sides struggled with the conditions.

“We did get the ball in the net in the first-half but the ref blew up for a foul by Warren Byerley which I thought was a bit harsh. We had a bit more possession than them, but they caught us on the break a couple of times.

“I told the lads at the break to move the ball a bit quicker and get more width, and with the wind dropping we were able to get it down and play a bit. We played some good stuff at times and got our just rewards in the end.”

King beat several club’s to Ford’s signature last week and repaid the manager’s judgement. “It was a dream start for Mark. There was a lot of interest in him from several clubs but I think it was the fact that we give people a chance, and they don’t just get in on reputation, that swayed him.

“I told him that he would get the opportunity at some point and to make the most of it when you do, and he did just that with two goals.”

The win moved Weymouth up to 11th spot in the Evo-Stik South Premier league following the 3-0 defeat at Chippenham Town in midweek where King made no excuses.

“We had a number of opportunities in the first half to been three or four up at the break but didn’t take them. The old cliché ‘goals win games’ is true and unfortunately we didn’t take our chances.

“So yes we can feel sorry for ourselves, but the fact  is we may feel a little hard done by not to have taken something from the game, we would have settled for a draw before the game, but we didn’t deserve to win the game because we didn’t take our chances.”

King will be sweating on two players that picked up injuries before Saturday’s visit of Stourbridge. New signing Ben Joyce tweaked a hamstring whilst Groves injured his calf.

With a visit to bottom club Swindon Supermarine and then two more winnable home matches, King is hopeful that his side can get enough points to put them in the play-off mix.

“Another couple of wins should see us safe which is the first priority, but if we can get some consistency then we won’t be far away from the play-offs.”
