17th February 2012EAST DEVON NETBALL: Beware the Wasps’ sting
HONITON NETBALL LEAGUE
After a week of lost fixtures due to bad weather the netball fixtures resumed at Honiton writes Graham Ingram.
With Flamingos not playing OPG had a chance to clinch second place in Division One when they came up against Wasps.
But it was not to be as Wasps beat OPG for the second time this season to leave the second place in the division wide open and dependent upon the last game for each side.
OPG had started stronger taking the first quarter by 8-6, but with Jacqui Rice shooting well for Wasps they had much the better of the second and third periods so that going into the final session they had a 33-20 lead.
With Helen Wright doing well for OPG the final quarter was closer but Wasps clinched the victory with a 43-27 win.
The other game was a close run affair between Uplowman and Bo-Peeps. This was their third meeting and in the previous two encounters the honours had been shared.
This time it was Uplowman who led from the start with Andrea Britten playing well.
By half way the Peeps were 13-18 down and although Poppy Williams worked hard for Bo-Peeps it was Uplowman who took the points with a close 34-29 win.
DIVISION TWO
IN division two, the Weather Girls bounced back from their shock defeat last time out with their third victory of the season against second placed Tip Top Trees by 23-19.
3Ts had taken the first quarter by 6-4 but at half way the Girls were 11-9 ahead. The third period was goal for goal so that at the start of the final session the Weather Girls still had a two goal lead over 3Ts at 17-15.
With Maria Dorothy playing well the Girls built on this lead to win by 23-19 despite excellent play from the elegant Harriet Eaton at GD for Tip Top Trees.
NAS started the evening as the only team in the second flight without a win, and they were up against JD Tyres.
Defender Sarah Green was in fine form for NAS who took an early 7-3 lead, one that they built on throughout the game.
Although Tanya Broom worked hard for JD they could not get back into the game and NAS picked up their first win of the campaign with a comfortable 26-15 victory.
