2nd February 2012WEYMOUTH: Wildlife Legacy Trail for walkers
By Harry Walton
WALKERS have been given details of the new Legacy Trail which will eventually run from Littlemoor in Weymouth to Portland Bill.
A meeting of Wild About Weymouth and Portland at the island’s Community 2000 hall heard that the walk will stretch for 22kms.
Co-ordinator Lyn Cooch said that all installations work for the walk was hoped to be completed by the end of May with the walk hopefully open in time for the Olympics in July.
She added: “This walk links Weymouth and Portland through its unique and very varied wildlife sites.
“Walkers will be able to enjoy areas such as the Lorton Valley Nature Park, Weymouth Wetlands, Chesil, the Fleet, the quarries of Portland, the Bill and the Jurassic coastline.
“A number of way points have been developed which will provide an innovative new way to enjoy the coastline and the wonderful views of the area by enabling people to find out more information about what they are looking at.
“Each way point will have a large concrete circle lined with timber with the circle framing a view.
“The bottom of the circle will contain information and it also doubled as a seat for people to sit on.”
The circles not only detail views but a variety of wildlife as well from woodpeckers and otters to owls, terns, butterflies, lizards, hares and goats.
