30th December 2011SOUTH SOMERSET: A message from David Laws
David Laws MP has issued the following greeting: A very happy New Year to all Weekender readers!
Mr Laws said: “2011 was my 10th year as MP for Yeovil Constituency, and it has been a great privilege to serve the people of our area, and to represent you in Parliament.
“2011 was a tough year for the national economy and for the economy of South Somerset. Low pay rises, high inflation, and the action the Government is having to take to get our public finances back in a decent state, have all squeezed peopleís incomes.
“2012 is not shaping up to be an easy year either, with the economic problems of the eurozone and the huge overhang of private and public debts both threatening to be a drag on growth.
“That is why my top priority in 2012 will continue to be the economy supporting local businesses, and seeking to do more to promote investment in much needed affordable housing and in a better transport infrastructure.
“Nationally, I want to see the Coalition continue, and make progress on getting our debts under control. The Government and the Bank of England need to do all they can to prevent Britain from being dragged into a recession, which could be caused by the eurozone’s economic problems.
“Inflation should fall significantly in 2012, but the Government must also consider taking action to cut the tax burden on people on low and middle incomes. The Government adopted the Lib Dem policy of raising the tax free personal allowance so that no one has to pay tax on the first £10,000 of their income. It would be good to see another big increase in the tax allowance announced in the March Budget.
“Life is not, fortunately, only about economics, and there will be other events to celebrate in 2012, including the 60th anniversary of the Queenís assumption of the Crown, and the Olympic games in August.
“I have to confess that I was rather dubious when the last Government committed to spending all this money on the Olympics, but now that we have got it, we might as well enjoy it, and this will be a once in a lifetime event for the UK!
“In 2012, I shall continue my regular weekly advice centres, my roving advice centres, and my annual villages tour. One of the best parts of my job is the opportunity to give people practical assistance sometimes with issues that are nothing to do with politics at all. If you need to come to see me in 2012, you can get the dates and times from my office, on 01935 423284. You can book a specific time to see me in Yeovil and Chard, but my advice centres in Crewkerne, Ilminster, South Petherton and Ilchester will remain open, so that you can see me without any pre-booking.
“Finally, I wish to thank all those who have given me support and encouragement over this last year this has meant a huge amount to me.”
All best wishes, David.
