30th December 2011LYME REGIS: National trust shop going from strength to strength on the seafront
THE new National Trust shop on Lyme Regis seafront is proving so popular that it is staying open for seven days a week during the winter.
Staff at the new shop, which opened as part of the refurbished Marine Parade shelters in July, said they have got off to a good start despite it being a difficult year for retail.
“We’ve been delighted at the response to our presence on the seafront,” said manager Gillian Melly.
“We had planned to be open for two days a week through the winter but we have been doing very well and now we can be available for seven days a week for people wanting to drop in.”
Leased from the town council, the newly built shop doesn’t just stock the expected range of National Trust products, concentrating as well on a range of quality seasonal items and gifts.
“We have built up the range of stock since we opened and anyone who hasn’t been since the summer will see a big difference. We have a range of good quality and locally made jams and biscuits as well as the popular National Trust products. Our books – all on a local theme or about the coast and countryside – are selling well and greetings cards using local photographs are proving very popular.”
The new winter opening hours for the shop are 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, and from 11am to 4pm on Sundays.
Gillian added: “It is a new venture for the National Trust and we wanted to make it relevant to Lyme Regis and to adapt to what the locals and visitors want. To have it so successful is great for us and for the town.”
