WEYMOUTH FOOTBALL: Six-goal Terras burn down Thatcham

Weymouth 6 Thatcham Town 1

Attendance: 367

AFTER dramatically snatching a replay with a last kick goal from Jamie Beasley, Weymouth cruised through to the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy with a four goal first-half salvo.

Thatcham had two players sent-off in the first match, but this time it was the Terras Richard Marshallsay who was dismissed in the second-half for two yellow cards, but it made little difference as Warren Byerley bagged a hat-trick with two late goals.

The Terras took the lead on two minutes when Thatcham failed to clear Stephen Reed’s free kick properly and Byron Napper played in an unmarked Beasley on the right who drove the ball through visiting keeper Paul Strudley’s legs.

The keeper then made a double save from Ben Gerring and Byerley before he was beaten again on 18 minutes. He failed to reach Beasley’s cross allowing Byerley to nod the ball back into Malson’s path who volleyed home from eight yards.

The keeper was not having the best of nights and appeared unsighted by Malsom ducking under Beasley’s 20-yard drive from the edge of the box which he let slip through his hands at the near post for Weymouth’s third.

Weymouth continued to make chances and Malsom should have converted the rebound from close range after Strudley could only parry Reed’s shot.

However soon after he produced a curling cross from the right which the unmarked Byerley flying in at the far post, headed home from close range to give Weymouth a 4-0 lead after just 37 minutes.

The game effectively over Weymouth appeared happy to go through the motions after the interval, but Gareth Thomas forced Manley into a point blank save just after Marshallsay was dismissed.

However, he offended at the other end minutes later when he upended sub Craig Duff, and Byerley casually beat Strudley from the penalty spot.

Thatcham to their credit continued to keep attacking and they were rewarded five minutes from the end when Sam Flegg beat Manley with a well placed sidefooted shot from just inside the edge of the box.

Byerley completed his hat trick two minutes from the end when he scored  at the second attempt after Strudley had blocked his first effort before Thatcham signed off by striking the woodwork twice through Tom Etheridge and Jemel Johnson.
